Your LinkedIn About section is one of the most heavily-weighted fields in recruiter search. Yet most people leave it blank or fill it with a one-paragraph stream of buzzwords. Below: the 2-paragraph formula that works in 2026, 10 real-world examples across roles, and the specific phrases that get filtered out by recruiter search.

The 30-second answer

The 2026 About formula:

¶1 — Three to five sentences.
Lead with what you do + one concrete outcome with a number. Add
one more outcome. End with what you want next.

¶2 — One to two lines.
Comma-separated list of hard skills. Use the language of the role
  you want.

That’s it. Total: 80–150 words. Recruiters scan, search for keywords, and decide whether to message you in ~10 seconds.

Why the About section matters more than people think

LinkedIn Recruiter — the paid product recruiters use — ranks profiles by keyword density across:

  1. Headline (highest weight)
  2. About (second highest)
  3. Current position title
  4. Skills section
  5. Past positions

The About is the second-most-impactful field. Yet it’s often the most under-optimized.

When a recruiter Boolean-searches “Kubernetes engineer fintech remote”, LinkedIn ranks profiles by how well those keywords appear across these fields. A blank About means your profile ranks lower than equivalent candidates whose About contains those terms.

Frequently asked questions

Should I have one master About section or multiple versions?

LinkedIn only lets you have one. Make it work for your primary target role. If you’re searching across two very different roles, weight toward the higher-priority one.

Should I include my email?

Optional. Recruiters can message you via LinkedIn. Including email slightly speeds outreach but adds spam risk.

How often should I update?

Every 6 months minimum. Every time you have a new quantified outcome worth featuring.

Should I use emojis or bullets in About?

Avoid emojis. Some candidates use unicode bullets (•) — works but isn’t necessary. Plain paragraph form is fine.

How long is too long?

Over 200 words: too long. Recruiters skim and only see the first ~120 words anyway. Front-load important content.
