UK CV conventions are similar to US resume rules in the ways that matter for ATS parsing — but they differ in three specific ways that catch international candidates out: page size, photo policy, and personal details on the CV. This article covers the UK-specific differences and links to a free .docx template that works for both UK and Irish Applicant Tracking Systems.

The 30-second version

A UK CV that parses cleanly through ATSes like Workday, Greenhouse, Bullhorn, and Vincere needs to:

A4 page size (not US Letter — small but real difference)
No photo (same as US — bias-prevention auto-rejection)
Personal details: name + email + phone + location only (no DOB, no marital status, no nationality unless asked)
Same single-column, parser-safe format as a US ATS resume
UK English spelling (“optimisation”, “organised”, “favourable”)
British address format for location (City, Region — e.g., “London, UK” or “Manchester, England”)

The structural rules of the ATS don’t change at the border. The formatting conventions do.

What’s the same as a US resume

All the ATS-parsing rules apply identically:

Single column, no tables, no text boxes
Standard section headers (PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION)
Contact info in body text, not in the docx header
Calibri or Arial, 11pt body
Real Unicode bullets
.docx format preferred over PDF unless portal demands PDF

Why the same: ATSes used by UK recruiters (Bullhorn, Vincere, JobAdder, Workday, Greenhouse, etc.) use the same XML-parsing engines as their US counterparts. The format that works for one works for the other.

What’s different from a US resume

A4 page size, not US Letter

US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) is slightly wider and shorter than A4 (8.27 × 11.69 inches). For a UK CV:

Use Microsoft Word → Layout → Size → A4
Adjust margins: 0.75” top/bottom, 0.7” left/right (slightly narrower than US to fit content on A4)

If you submit a US-Letter sized CV in the UK, it prints with margins cut off or oddly spaced. Some ATSes also flag the size mismatch internally.

No photo, same reasoning as US

UK employment law follows similar bias-prevention principles. Most large UK ATSes strip or flag CVs with photos. Some companies use anonymised recruiting that requires no name AND no photo.

Same recommendation: omit the photo. Always.

Personal details — name + contact only

Older UK CV guides recommended including:

Date of birth
Marital status
Nationality
Number of children

All four are out of fashion in 2026 and several are flagged by modern UK ATSes as protected-characteristic data they’re not supposed to be scoring on.

Include only:

Full name
Professional email
UK mobile (format: +44 7XXX XXXXXX or 07XXX XXXXXX)
City + Region (e.g., “London, UK” — not full street address)
LinkedIn URL

UK English vs US English

This matters for ATS keyword matching and for human reader perception.

Use UK English consistently throughout if applying to UK roles. If applying to multinational roles, US English is acceptable but the UK spelling reads as more authentic to UK recipients.

”Personal Statement” vs “Professional Summary”

UK CVs often use “Personal Statement” or “Profile” as the top section header instead of “Professional Summary.” Both parse correctly. “Professional Summary” is more universal; “Personal Statement” is more British.

Stick with “Professional Summary” if you might apply internationally later.

Length: 2 pages standard

Where US resumes hit 1 page for 0-8 years experience, UK CVs are typically 2 pages even at junior levels. The expected detail is higher.

For 0-5 years: 1.5 to 2 pages. For 5-15 years: 2 pages. For 15+ years: 2-3 pages.

The ATS still parses the whole document — page count doesn’t affect parsing, only human perception of “appropriate detail level.”

Education position

In the US, Education goes below Experience for everyone except recent grads. In the UK, Education stays near the top for the first 3-5 years after graduation, regardless of work experience accumulated.

UK senior candidates eventually move Education down, but stay there longer than US candidates would.

UK-specific keyword conventions

UK job postings use slightly different vocabulary than US ones. When keyword-extracting (see the cheatsheet), watch for these UK-flavour equivalents:

Frequently asked questions

Should I list GCSEs / A-Levels?

For recent graduates (within 3 years): yes, briefly. Include A-Levels with grades and GCSEs with the count + summary (e.g., “10 GCSEs A*-B”).

For anyone 5+ years past university: omit GCSEs entirely; A-Levels optional and brief.

What about “References available upon request”?

Same as US — omit. It’s assumed.

Do UK employers expect a cover letter (covering letter)?

Yes, often more than US employers do. Include one even when “optional.” The 3-paragraph format is the same as US.

Should I include hobbies on a UK CV?

Hobbies are slightly more common on UK CVs than US, but they’re still weak signal. Include 1 line of 2-3 hobbies only if they’re directly job-relevant or genuinely distinctive (national-level competitive chess, published author, etc.).

What about ATS systems specific to UK contracting?

Contractor-focused platforms like Bullhorn and Vincere have the same parsing requirements. Some additionally score for IR35 status and day-rate expectations — those go in the cover letter, not the CV.

Salary expectations on the CV?

No. Even when the JD asks. Reserve for the cover letter or the recruiter call.
